Spending Fast 2011

This picture has nothing to do with this post. I just like it.

You may remember the spending fast I did this last March. I'm planning on doing it again for 2011 in February. If you want to join in, please do and start planning for it. Here is how it works.

You can buy:
  • Groceries (no fast food or eating out)
  • Gas / public transportation
  • Rent/Utilities (please pay your bills)

 Not Okay to Buy:
  • ANYTHING ELSE

See, it's pretty simple. I also limit my food budget to $50 a week. This is a challenge but I like it. If you were on the fence last year, this is your year! Please join us. February is short. I know you can do it!

I also want to point out that I don't do this just to save money. I do it for the challenge, the decreased consumerism and the increased creativity I get from it. Jason likes that I do it, probably for the money.

I'm in!!! But, I need to buy diapers too. And, I also need to make an exception for Valentines Day. Do I still qualify?

OK, I'm going to join you but I do have a couple (or three or four) exceptions. There are two family birthdays in Feb. so I'll buy gifts for them. I also have a dinner in Feb. that has a pre-set price so it might affect my grocery budget. Although, I haven't decided what I'm going to limit myself to since its just me. If you can feed three people for $50 I should be able to do it for $35.
Oh, the other exception...as you know I had set aside some money to use for home improvement projects so I'll continue to draw from it for painting, carpet etc but it does not cover any new accessories.
I'm kind of excited about it!!!

Hey, I read about your spending fast last year and really enjoyed it. I already told my husband that we were going to do it in February, so I'm super excited that you are doing it then too. How are you handling the V-day situation?

I am so excited! This is going to be great and may change the way you spend. At least it does for me.

Yes Dianna, you still qualify. And I think a Valentines Day exception sounds great.

Mom - I think your exceptions sound good too! I would be so proud if you could make $35 work. That would be amazing.

Natasha - Yay! I'm glad you're on board too. We will probably go out for Valentines Day in the beginning of March. We never really go out on the actual day anyway because there are so many other people eating out. And we are lame and don't really do gifts. You can make an exception if you want though.

I am tweaking my grocery budget. I think $35 a week might be a little too ambitious so I'm going to raise it to $40 but I'm actually thinking in terms of $160 for the month. That way if there is a sale on something I can stock up a little one week and then spread the balance out over the month. I'm sure I'll do better if I stick as closely as possible to $40 a week but I want to leave open the possibility of taking advantage of bargains. I'm getting pumped up for it.
