Jason, Calder and I went to Columbus for the weekend. We had a great time. I'm sure I'll blog all about the details later, but I have a scenario I want to run by you.
We went to dinner one night at a nice restaurant (not so nice that Calder wasn't invited) but still nice. When perusing the menu I noted the price of my meal and also noticed the lack of steak. It was a little surprising since the word 'grill' is in their restaurant name. The crab cakes were delicious though.
After dinner the check came and Jason and I noticed they charged $7 more for each of our entrees than the menu listed. That's $14 total.
WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE?
We brought it to the attention of our server who said "Maybe I gave you the lunch menu" and went to check. She had indeed given us the lunch menu but neither of us noticed. Apparently the dinner menu has steak on it. All well. The manager ended up taking the extra charge off the bill but I felt a bit uncomfortable and he made it seem like he was doing us a huge favor.
Jason did end up tipping for the full (overcharged) amount even though it was the server's error but I'm curious whether we did the right thing. Should we not have mentioned it?

I think you did the right thing. Especially if you were planning to order steak. The waitress was at fault, and it's perfectly fine to expect them to compensate you for it. That's my opinion, anyway.
I definitely would have mentioned something! $14 is a lot in my opinion. I'm surprised the waitress didn't notice it was the lunch menu based on the things you ordered. She was at fault, and you guys shouldn't have had to pay for her mistake.
I can't believe the manager tried to make you guys feel bad about it. Either give people the discount and be nice about it or be a jerk and don't give the discount, but don't give the discount and be a jerk about it.
Anyway, we would've definitely brought up the $14 difference, but we would've done the same with the tip. We probably would've also "mentioned" to the manager or server how disappointed we were that we didn't get to order steak. I mean, that's so disappointing that you had to order something that you didn't really want and then got charged more for it.
You did the right thing. It's to bad they acted like they were doing you a favor by dropping the extra.
